What is an Aufguss?
Originating in Northern Europe, Aufguss is a guided sauna ritual that transforms heat into an immersive sensory experience.
During an Aufguss, water infused with carefully selected essential oils is poured onto the hot stones while the sauna guide uses flowing towel techniques to circulate the aromatic steam throughout the room. Combined with music, atmosphere and storytelling, each session becomes far more than simply sitting in the heat.
Through the Heat builds on this tradition by creating original guided journeys, each with its own story, scents and atmosphere, offering an experience unlike anything else in Perth.
I've never been to an Aufguss before. Is this suitable for beginners?
Absolutely. Most of our guests are experiencing an Aufguss journey for the very first time. We’ll guide you through each stage of the experience, and there’s no expectation to have previous sauna experience. Simply arrive with an open mind and listen to your body throughout the journey.
What should I bring?
Please bring:
Please bring the following with you:
- Swimwear suitable for a shared sauna environment.
- Two towels: one to sit on inside the sauna, and a second towel for drying off or showering after your experience.
- A reusable water bottle to help you stay hydrated throughout the session.
- Thongs to wear between the sauna, showers and cooling areas. No outside footwear is allowed in the sauna area.
Glass bottles are not permitted. If you choose to take your water bottle into the sauna, please be aware that both the bottle and the water inside it can become very hot during the session, particularly if the bottle is made from metal.
To help maintain a clean and hygienic environment, outdoor shoes are not permitted within the sauna and recovery facilities.
Filtered drinking water and complimentary refreshments are available throughout the experience.
What should I wear?
Please wear comfortable swimwear throughout the experience. Swimwear is required for all guided group sessions.
What can I expect during the experience?
Each Through the Heat journey lasts approximately 90 minutes.
You’ll experience three guided sauna rounds of around 10–15 minutes each, with time between rounds to cool down, rehydrate and enjoy the recovery facilities. Every journey has its own story, scents, music and atmosphere, creating a different experience each time.
What if I get too hot?
Your comfort always comes first.
You’re welcome to leave the sauna at any time if you feel uncomfortable or simply need a break. Our facilitators will guide the group, but you’re encouraged to listen to your body and participate at your own pace.
Do I have to use the plunge pools?
Not at all.
Cooling down between sauna rounds is an important part of the experience, but how you choose to cool down is entirely up to you. Löyly Recovery offers both an 8°C cold plunge and a 36°C magnesium warm plunge, and you’re welcome to enjoy either, both or neither during the breaks between rounds.
If plunge pools aren’t for you, you can simply cool down naturally, enjoy a cool shower, rehydrate and relax between sessions. We encourage you to choose what feels right for your body.
Can I leave the sauna during a round?
Each guided sauna round lasts approximately 12 to 15 minutes and has been carefully designed as a complete experience. We encourage guests to remain for the full round whenever possible, as this allows you to fully experience the story, scents, music and towel rituals as they unfold.
If you genuinely need to leave because you’re feeling unwell or too uncomfortable, you’re welcome to do so. Your wellbeing always comes first. If this happens, we simply ask that you leave as quietly as possible to minimise disruption for the rest of the group.
Will there be photography or filming?
Most public Through the Heat journeys are private experiences, and photography during the session is not part of the experience.
Occasionally we host special launch or promotional sessions where photography or filming takes place. If that’s the case, it will be clearly stated on the booking page, and you’ll be asked for your consent before completing your booking.
What happens if I need to cancel?
Our cancellation policy is outlined during the booking process and forms part of your participant agreement. If you’re unable to attend, please contact us as soon as possible so we can discuss the options available for your booking.
Do I need to arrive early?
Yes. We recommend arriving 10–15 minutes before your session begins.
This gives you time to check in, shower, settle into the space and prepare for the experience. Guided journeys begin promptly to ensure the group shares the full experience together.
Is this about wellness or meditation?
Through the Heat isn’t a meditation class, and you don’t need to have any experience with mindfulness.
These are immersive sauna journeys that combine heat, steam, scent, music and storytelling to create a memorable sensory experience. Some journeys are reflective, others playful or adventurous, but all are designed to help you become fully present through the experience itself.
